The UNC Greensboro Department of Nutrition is one of the oldest food and nutrition programs in North Carolina. It provides students a small, close-knit community within a large university and opportunities at all levels to work with expert clinicians, researchers, and top-notch mentors.

We have state of the art equipment and laboratories to support teaching and research opportunities, and our teaching kitchen laboratory is one of the largest spaces of its kind in the state to provide hands-on experiences.

Students have access to an extensive network of community partners, internship sites, and professional development opportunities. They are exposed to well- and lesser-known career paths in nutrition, ranging from dietetics and community wellness programming to nutrition science, research, and academia.

Our curriculum is constantly evolving to include emerging topics in the field (e.g., weight inclusivity, culinary medicine, sports nutrition).

Clinical courses are taught by credentialed clinical professionals with years of experience, and research courses are taught by experts conducting innovative and impactful grant-funded research.

Department Highlights

Faculty

The Department of Nutrition faculty includes doctorally-trained nutrition researchers with responsibilities for both conducting externally-funded research and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as registered dietitian nutritionists who have extensive clinical and industry experience.

Research

The three signature areas of research in Nutrition are:

  1. Obesity, energy balance, and chronic disease
  2. Bioactive food component effects on cell function and prevention of disease processes
  3. Nutrition risks and needs of underserved/limited resource populations.

Visit the Faculty page or departmental Research page for more information about these areas of research and the faculty who conduct applied/translational and basic research in these areas.

Accreditation of Programs

Both the Human Nutrition and Dietetics concentration (also known as the Didactic Program in Dietetics – DPD) and the P.B.C.-Dietetic Internship program are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics.

Therefore, at the undergraduate level, successful completion of the bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics at UNCG qualifies you to compete for placement in ACEND-accredited dietetic internships.  Following completion of a dietetic internship, students will take a national registration exam to earn the registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) credential.
